What is the Energy Intensive Industries Compensation Scheme?

At Leyton we are experts in the non-commodity costs of energy. This includes reviewing what other costs businesses incur when it comes to carbon, energy, and emissions. Carbon pricing and emissions trading schemes increase costs for electricity generators because they have to buy allowances for the emissions they cause.

Energy-intensive industries pay more because of their higher consumption thus leading to a significant price differential between the UK and countries which have lower or zero pricing for carbon. The EII compensation scheme is designed to help reduce this differential.

Who is eligible for the EII Compensation?

The guidance is extremely specific to your business, but as a general guide you must:

1- Manufacture a product which has a relevant  Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code.

2- The indirect carbon cost of the business must be over 5% of GAV to demonstrate that your business is “energy-intensive”

3- It does not matter if you conduct some eligible and some non-eligible activities you can still apply.
