The Benefit

With Leyton’s support, BOAL Extrusion successfully secured the Energy Intensive Industries (EII) exemption – resulting in a significant reduction in non-commodity costs on their energy bill. The savings, estimated at £250,000 per year, are making a real difference to the company’s bottom line. With BOAL’s ambitious growth plans, this exemption is set to contribute over £1 million to their EBITDA over the next three years – supporting long-term efficiency in an energy-intensive manufacturing environment.

Where did the idea come from to get involved in the scheme?

“Thinking back about energy costs facing our business – as we know, aluminium’s energy intensive. Back in 2022, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, energy prices more than doubled. Our energy bills went from £1.8 million to over £4 million within 12 months. You just can’t keep up with that type of escalation of costs.”

Had you heard about the scheme before?

“It’s quite complex. We were already doing UK ETS compensation and I wasn’t sure if EII exemption was the same thing or something different. In one mind, I thought I was sorted – I didn’t know there was a whole new scheme.”

How was the application process?

“We set up calls where the scheme was explained to us – the potential benefits and estimated savings. When you’re told it could be around 4p per kilowatt hour, you do the math and realise it’s worth pursuing. The process was smooth – we just had to provide energy bills and contracts, things that were readily available. It was quite quick, It took about three months.”

What were the savings?

“We estimated savings of around a quarter of a million pounds per year. When we mapped that out during our three-year business planning, it added a million pounds to our EBITDA. It was a pretty easy one to say yes to.”

What advice would you give to businesses who might be eligible?

“Of course it’s a no-brainer. A million pounds over three years – I’d take that any time. Just get it checked is the advice.”
