Kansas will reduce its state sales tax on food to 0% by January 1, 2025, as part of a gradual decrease that began last year. Meanwhile, Massachusetts will conduct a tax amnesty from November 1 to December 30 this year, waiving most penalties for eligible taxpayers who file overdue returns and pay any owed taxes and interest for periods with returns due by December 31, 2024. Requests for amnesty must be submitted by November 1. Don’t worry if you miss the amnesty filing deadline – MA still has Voluntary Disclosure Applications (VDAs).  These VDAs also apply to income, sales, and excise taxes, and allow taxpayers to waive penalties and lower interest for past periods!

Alaska’s Remote Seller Sales Tax Commission has announced that the state will join others in eliminating the transaction count requirement for establishing economic nexus, effective next year. The Commission has revised the Alaska Remote Seller Uniform Code, removing the 200-transaction threshold. Starting January 1, 2025, sellers will only need to register with the Commission if their gross sales (including marketplace sales) exceed $100,000 in the current or previous calendar year within the state. Alaska does not have a state-wide sales tax, but local communities are increasingly uniting to require collection and remittance of local sales tax. Want to talk with out experts? Schedule a call!
