Leyton and Sailing: navigating towards a fairer and more responsible world

Leyton anchors its commitment to environmental and social causes through sailing. Beyond providing financial support to associations, we have chosen an innovative model that reflects who we are, allowing us to unleash our entrepreneurial spirit for greater impact. This model takes the form of a collective that we co-founded: We Sail for People and Planet. It brings together two skippers, Sam Goodchild and Thomas Ruyant, Entourage and Team For the Planet, two impactful partners combating social exclusion and climate change, TR Racing team, Advens, and of course, Leyton. Our objective through this collective is to use the media and mobilizing power of sailing, and of a race like the Vendée Globe, to multiply the impact of our partners. The two IMOCA boats of the collective, FOR PEOPLE and FOR THE PLANET proudly display the emblems of Entourage and Team for the Planet. Throughout the races, they navigate the seas, reminding us that a fairer and more responsible world is possible.

Sam Goodchild

34 years old – Skipper FOR THE PLANET

Through hard work and excellent results in recent years, the English skipper has become a seasoned sailor. A victory on the Pro Sailing Tour, 2 podium finishes in the Transat Jacques Vabre, historic performances on the Figaro circuit, and other experiences in the Ultim class have led him to a meteoric rise. Sam is now preparing for a new chapter in his career, the Vendée Globe 2024. A race that the Bristol native, now based in Lorient for the past 10 years, has dreamed of since his childhood and is currently preparing for in the best possible way, with 3 podium finishes in as many races on his IMOCA “FOR THE PLANET”!

Thomas Ruyant

42 years old – Skipper FOR PEOPLE

Thomas Ruyant, hailing from Dunkirk, entered competitive sailing relatively late but quickly excelled, winning the Mini Transat in 2009 and the Route du Rhum in 2010 in Class 40. After a few years on the Figaro circuit, Thomas participated in the Vendée Globe 2016 but unfortunately had to abandon the race off the coast of New Zealand. Drawing on this experience, Thomas initiated a new project, partnering with Advens and the Entourage association. The result: a 6th place finish in the Vendée Globe 2020 and, most notably, a historic triple victory — in the Transat Jacques Vabre 2021 in double with Morgan Lagravière, the Route du Rhum 2022 in solo, and more recently, the Transat Jacques Vabre 2023 again with Morgan Lagravière on FOR PEOPLE.

Morgan Lagravière and Antoine Koch

36 and 45 years old – Co-skippers

Antoine Koch is the co-skipper of Sam Goodchild for the 2023 season. He brings his passion for sailing and his engineering experience to the project, being the architect of FOR THE PLANET, the boat on which the duo sails. As for Thomas Ruyant’s team, Morgan Lagravière is the co-skipper on FOR PEOPLE. Hailing from Reunion Island, “Momo” initially excelled in the Figaro class before diversifying his experiences in both monohull and multihull boats. A well-rounded sailor, he was already Thomas’s co-skipper during their victory in the Transat Jacques Vabre 2021 and achieved in 2023 a magnificent double triumph.

Toward a more responsible world

Already patrons of innovative and impactful associations, we wanted to go further and unleash our entrepreneurial spirit to find a model that maximizes the impact of our partners’ initiatives. Our collective, We Sail for People and Planet, was conceived to harness the power of elite sports to accelerate tangible and high-potential social and environmental programs. By providing them with visibility through sailing races, we are amplifying the impact beyond what we would have otherwise had with a simple donation !

The Summit of Sustainable Organizations

Already 3 editions !

Launched in 2020, the Sustainable Organizations Summit is an annual event organized by Leyton to accelerate organizations’s environmental, energy, and societal transition. It brings together stakeholders from various backgrounds who are committed to a sustainable transition of the economy. The first summit took place in Marseille in 2020. Over two weeks, Leyton gathered diverse local stakeholders interested in exchanging ideas on various sustainable development topics. The second edition was also held in Marseille in 2021, featuring a “sustainable innovation challenge”. The third edition was more ambitious, focusing on a decisive theme and taking place at the heart of the village of the Route du Rhum 2022.

Impactful Projects

The Magenta Project, Héole, Carbon Footprint…

We have been undertaking impactful impacts since 2018. For the first time in the nautical sector, our teams conducted the carbon footprint assessment of our Class40. In 2021, the team also partnered with The Magenta Project to promote the inclusion of women in competitive sailing. Female sailors benefited from a series of training sessions and multihull training with Sam Goodchild and his crew aboard the Ocean Fifty. Throughout the races, the trimaran also served as a laboratory for collecting data and improving sustainable innovations: innovative, flexible, organic solar panels developed by the startup Héole were installed on board. The race towards sustainable transition is well underway !

Our partners We Sail for People and Planet

Leyton co-founded the collective ‘We Sail for People and Planet,’ alongside Advens and TRR, taking the intersection of sports performance and societal impact to the next level by entering two boats in the upcoming Vendée Globe. The goal is to involve as many people as possible in actions for People and the Planet, the two causes supported by our impactful partners, Entourage and Team for The Planet !

TR Racing, based in Lorient and founded by Thomas Ruyant and Alexandre Fayeulle, is a structure dedicated to the design, preparation, and management of sailboats and offshore racing programs. The team handled the entire implementation of Thomas Ruyant’s program on the IMOCA LinkedOut for the Vendée Globe 2020. Since then, alongside the sailor from Dunkirk, TR Racing has won the Transat Jacques Vabre 2021 and the Route du Rhum 2022. TR RACING conceived and now operates the “We Sail for People and Planet” project, bringing together two sailboats, two skippers, and a collective of committed actors working for People and the Planet

Since 2014, the Entourage association has been combating social exclusion by rebuilding support networks for those who have lost them. How? By engaging citizens, both included and excluded, (thanks to technology) through our 3 programs: A neighborhood network through our mobile application to rebuild connections with isolated individuals. A professional network through the LinkedOut program to encourage and facilitate the professional inclusion of the most excluded. An affinity network with Entourage Sport to enable everyone to re-engage through sports.

Founded in 2019, Team for the Planet is a non-profit organization fighting against climate change. Convinced of collective intelligence and human ingenuity, they believe that all around the world, there are scientists and inventors developing solutions capable of slowing climate change and addressing the root causes of CO2 emissions. That’s why they’ve united their forces to identify high-impact innovations worldwide. They recruit seasoned entrepreneurs to transform the best innovations with strong economic models. These are businesses designed and configured to successfully combat greenhouse gases.
