What is the Horizon AI Program?

Horizon AI is a specialized program focused on capturing economic potential from Applied AI, administered by DIGITAL, which is a Canadian Supercluster that seeks to fast-track the advancement of Canadian digital technologies that improve health and wellbeing, protect the environment and drive economic productivity.  

DIGITAL will co-invest funding to provide more than $60M of new investment in the commercialization and adoption of innovative AI technology solutions. 

Priority areas:

The program is focusing on 3 priorities:  

  • AI for Health – this includes expanding equitable access, personalized and advancing diagnostics and treatments; 
  • AI for Earth – this includes smart farming, food security and waste reduction; green exploration, extraction and delivery of Canadian natural resources; environmental protection and preparedness; 
  • AI for Services – reducing time spent on documentation and administrative tasks, as well as customer service across retail and e-commerce consumer-focused business sectors; 

Successful projects must include one or more of the following: 

  • Early commercialization and adoption of existing Canadian-owned AI technology solutions in new target markets ; 
  • Improvements or new developments to address verified product/market fit gaps for the purposes of commercialization and adoption of the AI technology solution. 
  • Projects must be collaborative and led by AI technology product company who owns and  will continue to invest in the AI technology solution(s); 
  • A minimum of three organizations must participate and contribute in a meaningful way; 
  • At least one organization representing a potential customer of the AI technology solution. 
  • A research or post-secondary academic institution is strongly encouraged; 
  • Partners may including those located outside of Canada ; 

Funding:

Program will fund 10 to 15 high-profile AI ecosystem commercialization projects; 

  • Project must have minimum eligible cost of $3 million
  • DIGITAL will co-invest up to 35% of project costs; 
  • Projects may take up to 2 years to complete; 
  • All projects must be completed by December 31, 2025.
