By integrating cutting-edge acoustic sensors into fully autonomous systems, Crewless Marine helps clients operate more efficiently, safely, and sustainably at sea.<\/div>\n<h2>Background<\/h2>\n<div>Founded in 2013 and headquartered in Cambridge, MA, Datawheel is a software firm that delivers data integration, distribution and visualization solutions. Datawheel helps businesses and governments to analyze and visualize disconnected and fragmented data to make informed strategic decisions. They offer unique services including DataLocation and DataCompany that bring customized data sets together to visualize their client\u2019s data. In addition, Datawheel\u2019s Research Labs are always conducting R&amp;D projects to improve backend tools, data distribution platforms, &amp; finding new solutions to complex visualization challenges.<\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/leyton.com\/us\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/2021\/05\/AdobeStock_393791848-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<div class=\"case-card\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/leyton.com\/us\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/2025\/05\/USA-LinkedIn-images-Image-Vault-2025-05-30T134505.081.jpg\" alt=\"How They were Innovative\"\/><\/figure>\n<h2>How They were Innovative<\/h2>\n<p>With support from the Leyton Grants Team, Crewless Marine secured a U.S. Department of Defense grant for <strong>Multi-sensor and Acoustic Contact Localization through Artificial Intelligence\/ Machine Learning.<\/strong> This program funds the development of technology that uses passive sensor data and artificial intelligence to detect and track maritime entities.<\/p>\n<p>Crewless Marine stood out for aligning closely with the program\u2019s goals, proposing a unified, intuitive heads-up display for multi-array sensor data to support Target Motion Analysis (TMA). In its Phase I application, the company detailed an approach combining sensor fusion, acoustic processing, and real-time visualization.<\/p>\n<p>As part of its everyday R&amp;D, the company builds custom arrays using proprietary or off-the-shelf hydrophones integrated with its own data acquisition and analysis tools. These systems have been deployed in Florida, Narragansett Bay, and Block Island Sound.<\/p>\n<p>In its application to Phase I of the grant, the company detailed a developed concept for an AI\/ML-based Target Motion Analysis (TMA) tool. The Phase I Option focused on demonstrating feasibility using unclassified data through analysis, modeling, simulation, and testing. If the Phase I Option is exercised, it will include the initial specifications and capability description for building a prototype in Phase II.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"case-card\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/leyton.com\/us\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/2025\/05\/USA-LinkedIn-images-Image-Vault-2025-05-30T135055.419.jpg\" alt=\"The Benefit\"\/><\/figure>\n<h2>The Benefit<\/h2>\n<p>Before conducting their study, Leyton\u2019s Grants &amp; Incentives team took the time to develop a deep understanding of Crewless Marine\u2019s work and capabilities. The insight allowed them to assist in the company&#8217;s application to a strategic funding opportunity, ultimately securing a <mark class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-color\"><strong>$240,000<\/strong> <\/mark>award to support Crewless Marine\u2019s continued innovation in maritime science.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Working with Leyton removed some of the stress and mystery of applying for an SBIR.
