International Women’s Day 2021

Sophie Shearer, Business Development Manager, Leyton UK

What does the International Women’s Day slogan, #ChooseToChallenge mean to you?

For me, #ChooseToChallenge means being heard. It means knowing that your contributions and views are valued – regardless of whether they are the popular opinion. Through challenging learned behaviours and invoking thought leadership, we can create a more inclusive and equal environment that in turn ensures sustainable and continued growth for women in business.

What advice would you give to women who are about to embark on their career?

My advice would be to take every opportunity that is given to you throughout your career, no matter how big or small. The perceived insignificant events can lead on to the greatest prospects, whilst those where you feel out of your comfort zone often provide the greatest learning opportunities and skill development. Ultimately, this all shapes not only a rewarding career but also creates the strongest sense of achievement too.

Do you have a role model who has inspired you during your career?

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to have worked with some of the most talented individuals who are seamlessly navigating both their career and family lives. The female camaraderie and support I have received from the early stages to date has been invaluable in contributing to my professional growth. All have collectively inspired and shaped me into the person I am today.

What do you enjoy most about working at Leyton?

The collaborative approach that is embedded from the moment you join the business. The cross team and department dynamism inspire creativity and provides a platform to rapidly progress your career. The external collaboration with clients is undoubtedly the most rewarding part, knowing that you are truly contributing to their business and in turn the wider economy.

Finally, how do you feel that Leyton supports women – both in their roles and their career growth?

Professionally, Leyton and the management team here have given me an inordinate amount of support for which I am eternally grateful. Being afforded the opportunity to demonstrate my capabilities and help build a culture where women are heard is something I am proud to be part of.
