This huge budget is being used to fund ambitious projects that have the potential to improve our society, from curing cancer to tackling climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, for organisations planning R&amp;D projects that have a focus on solving global challenges, it\u2019s well worth considering. Especially as the funding is a grant, which means you don\u2019t have to pay it back (assuming that the money is used as part of an approved proposal).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this article, we explain how Horizon Europe provides funding opportunities for bold and innovative research projects that will help to create a better world, with examples of the types of projects that have received funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-who-can-apply-for-horizon-europe-funding\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who can apply for Horizon Europe funding?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any organisation, whether private or public sector, large business or SME, can apply for Horizon Europe funding \u2013 as long as they have the capacity to carry out the proposed research project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the main driving forces behind Horizon Europe funding is improving collaboration between countries, allowing organisations to connect and share knowledge and technology to create innovative solutions to shared problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As such, most applications for funding will need a \u201cconsortium\u201d of at least three organisations from three different EU or <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/funding-tenders\/opportunities\/docs\/2021-2027\/common\/guidance\/list-3rd-country-participation_horizon-euratom_en.pdf\">associated<\/a> countries (at least one must be from the EU). This group should be made up of different types of organisations (e.g., businesses, universities, charities, etc). As long as your consortium meets this requirement, organisations from other non-EU countries can also join your research team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-types-of-projects-are-funded-by-horizon-europe\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What types of projects are funded by Horizon Europe?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu\/funding\/funding-opportunities\/funding-programmes-and-open-calls\/horizon-europe_en\">European Commission<\/a> describes Horizon Europe funding as helping \u201cto achieve the UN\u2019s Sustainable Development Goals [boosting] the EU\u2019s competitiveness and growth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In practice, applicants\u2019 projects are categorised into four parts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-pillar-one-excellent-science\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pillar one: Excellent science<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent science effectively means anything that strengthens the EU\u2019s scientific knowledge and capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-pillar-two-global-challenges\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pillar two: Global challenges<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Global challenges cover advancements in technologies that will help to make a difference to the big issues facing our society, which they categorise as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Health<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Culture, creativity &amp; inclusive societies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Civil security for society<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Digital industry &amp; space<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Climate energy &amp; mobility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food, bioeconomy, natural resources, agriculture &amp; environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:33px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-pillar-three-innovative-europe\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pillar three: Innovative Europe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Innovative Europe projects focus on helping to stimulate innovation within the EU, where tech development and knowledge transfer spurs the creation of new markets or ecosystems that can drive growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-widening-participation-amp-strengthening-the-european-research-area-era\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Widening participation &amp; strengthening the European Research Area (ERA)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While not a pillar like the other three, this part looks to fund projects that seek to boost research and innovation in countries with developing economies, creating collaboration opportunities through networking, sharing knowledge and resources, building centres of excellence and helping to boost the careers or researchers in less-research-intensive regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-are-the-goals-of-horizon-europe-funded-projects\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the goals of Horizon Europe-funded projects?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To help prioritise Horizon Europe\u2019s funding budget, and to spur organisations to set bold goals, the European Commission has identified five different \u201cmissions\u201d for projects to tackle, which include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Health<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Culture, creativity &amp; inclusive societies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Civil security for society<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Digital industry &amp; space<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Climate energy &amp; mobility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food, bioeconomy, natural resources, agriculture &amp;
