As February unfolds, the Canadian funding landscape is shifting toward specialized industrial growth and international collaboration. Moving beyond general innovation, the current wave of incentives prioritizes agricultural technology, advanced manufacturing, and space exploration. These programs are designed to help organizations bridge the gap between technical development and global market entry. Below are five top Canadian business grants that offer significant support for strategic expansion this february.

CanExport SME Program

  • Funding Amount: Covers 50% of eligible costs, from a minimum project budget of $20,000 up to a maximum grant of $50,000.
  • The Goal: This program is designed to help Canadian SMEs establish a presence in international markets where they currently have little or no sales (less than $100,000 or 10% of total sales). It supports strategic export marketing activities such as gathering market intelligence, IP protection, and expert business advice.
  • Who should apply: For-profit, incorporated Canadian legal entities with 3 – 500 full-time employees and annual revenues between $300,000 and $100 million.

Note: Agriculture and oil and gas sectors are no longer eligible, while defense and dual-use technology projects are increasingly emphasized.

Canadian International Innovation Program (CIIP)

  • Funding Amount: Up to $600,000 for R&D and up to $15,000 for partnership development.
  • The Goal: CIIP helps Canadian SMEs partner with international firms to commercialize new technologies. It covers up to 50% of eligible project costs to foster global commercialization.
  • Who should apply: Canadian-based SMEs looking to co-develop or commercialize technology with international partners.

Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation Competitiveness (AMIC)

  • Funding Amount: Up to 15% of project costs, including interest-free loans up to $5M.
  • The Goal: This Ontario-based stream supports SMEs in investing in capital equipment and skills development. It focuses on boosting competitiveness and creating high-quality jobs.
  • Who should apply: Advanced manufacturing companies in Ontario focused on technology adoption and upskilling.

Growing Greenhouses Program

  • Funding Amount: Up to $4M per applicant in non-repayable funding.
  • The Goal: This initiative helps Alberta’s greenhouse sector expand capacity and improve efficiency. It aims to increase year-round food production through modernization.
  • Who should apply: Greenhouse and controlled-environment agriculture businesses in Alberta looking to modernize operations.

Space Technology Development Program (STDP)

  • Funding Amount: Up to $1M in non-repayable funding per project.
  • The Goal: The STDP supports the development of pre-commercial space technologies with near-term commercial potential. It helps organizations increase technology readiness levels.
